Self-Esteem and Confidence Counselling in Brisbane

If a harsh inner voice tells you that you are not good enough, or you find yourself putting everyone else first and doubting every decision, counselling can help you build a kinder, steadier relationship with yourself. Registered psychologists and counsellors attend Brisbane Counselling Centre in Spring Hill, near the Brisbane CBD, and help people with low self-esteem, self-criticism and confidence, in person and online.

Support for low self-esteem

Psychologists and counsellors in attendance at our Centre help people understand where their beliefs about themselves come from, notice the patterns that keep those beliefs going, and practise new ways of thinking and acting that build genuine confidence.

What does low self-esteem look like?

Self-esteem is the overall opinion you hold of yourself and your worth. When it is low, you might notice:

  • a constant critical inner voice
  • feeling not good enough, or like a fraud at work or study (imposter feelings)
  • difficulty accepting compliments, or dismissing your achievements
  • people pleasing, and finding it hard to say no
  • avoiding challenges or new opportunities in case you fail
  • comparing yourself unfavourably with others, including on social media
  • perfectionism, or never feeling satisfied with what you do
  • staying in relationships or jobs that do not treat you well
  • feeling anxious, low or ashamed much of the time

Low self-esteem is not a diagnosis, but it often sits underneath anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties and stress, and it can make all of them harder to change.

Where does low self-esteem come from?

Our beliefs about ourselves usually form early, through experiences with family, school, friends and relationships. Criticism, bullying, neglect, high expectations, trauma, discrimination or major setbacks can all leave a lasting message that we are not good enough. Over time, that message can become the lens through which we see everything.

Understanding where your beliefs come from is not about blaming anyone. It is about recognising that they were learned, which means they can change. If painful past experiences are part of the picture, see our pages on trauma and PTSD and EMDR.

How can counselling help?

Your psychologist or counsellor will work with you to:

  • identify and challenge the self-critical thoughts that keep low self-esteem going
  • recognise your strengths and achievements in a realistic, balanced way
  • develop self-compassion, so you can respond to mistakes with understanding rather than harshness
  • practise assertiveness, boundaries and saying no
  • face situations you have been avoiding, one step at a time
  • reduce perfectionism and comparison

Approaches may include cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), compassion-focused therapy, schema therapy and EMDR where past experiences continue to shape how you see yourself. You can read more about what a typical session looks like.
