Our story
Brisbane Counselling Centre opened in 1989, founded by Dr Louis Salzman to help people move closer to how they wanted to be living their lives. For more than 35 years it has provided a professional, welcoming home for psychologists and counsellors in independent practice, supported by a reception team.
The Centre was one of the first practices to use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), a therapy for trauma and distressing memories, and EMDR remains an area of specialist expertise today. Read more about EMDR therapy.
How the Centre works
The psychologists and counsellors who attend Brisbane Counselling Centre are independent practitioners. Each brings their own training, experience and areas of interest, and each is responsible for their own clinical work. Our reception team takes care of bookings, fees, rebates and the day-to-day running of the Centre.
This means you can choose from a range of practitioners, with different approaches, experience and availability. If you are not sure who to see, our reception team will suggest someone suited to what you are looking for. Meet the psychologists and counsellors.
Registered and accountable
Every psychologist who attends the Centre is registered with the Psychology Board of Australia through Ahpra and follows its code of conduct. Counsellors hold tertiary qualifications in counselling and are members of recognised professional counselling bodies, including ACA and PACFA.
What people come to see us about
Mental health conditions are common. The Australian Bureau of Statistics found that more than one in five Australians aged 16 to 85 experienced a mental health condition in the previous 12 months, with anxiety the most common.
People come to the Centre for help with anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, grief and loss, stress and burnout, relationship difficulties, family conflict and much more, as well as for psychological assessments. The Centre also provides Employee Assistance Programs and critical incident support for organisations. See all counselling services.
