How to See a Psychologist in Brisbane: Mental Health Treatment Plans and Referrals

Not sure whether you need a referral, or how to get started with a psychologist? You don’t need to have it all figured out before you call. Here is exactly how referrals, Mental Health Treatment Plans and Medicare rebates work, so you can book with confidence.

Seeing a psychologist in Brisbane: how referrals and Medicare work

Many people are unsure how to get started with a psychologist, and whether they need to see their GP first. The short answer is that you can book with us directly and pay privately, or you can see your GP for a Mental Health Treatment Plan, which allows you to claim a Medicare rebate on a set number of sessions each calendar year.

What is a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

A Mental Health Treatment Plan is a plan prepared by your GP, or another eligible doctor, after they assess your mental health. It records your concerns and goals and includes a referral to a psychologist. Under Medicare’s Better Access initiative, the plan lets you claim a rebate for a limited number of individual psychology sessions each calendar year.

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?

No. You can make an appointment at Brisbane Counselling Centre without a referral and pay the full session fee. A referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan are needed only if you want to claim the Medicare rebate.

How to get a Mental Health Treatment Plan: step by step

  1. Book a longer appointment with your GP and ask for a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Mention that you would like to be referred to a psychologist.
  2. Your GP will talk with you about how you have been feeling, complete an assessment and, if appropriate, prepare the plan and referral.
  3. Contact our reception team on 07 3831 4452 and tell us you have a referral. We will help you choose a practitioner in attendance at the Centre who suits what you are looking for.
  4. Bring your referral, or ask your GP to send it to us, and attend your first session in Spring Hill or by telehealth.
  5. Your GP will usually review your progress after your first block of sessions to decide whether further sessions are appropriate.

How many Medicare-rebated sessions can I have?

Medicare currently allows up to 10 individual sessions with a psychologist per calendar year under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, when your GP has assessed that you are eligible. The rebate does not cover the full fee, so there is usually a gap payment. Our fees and rebates page explains session costs and what to expect.

What if I do not have a referral?

You can still start counselling right away. Many people choose to book privately, particularly when they want to be seen quickly or when their concern, such as relationship difficulties or work stress, is not linked to a diagnosed condition. Some private health funds also provide rebates for psychology or counselling sessions under extras cover.

What to expect at your first appointment

Your first session is a chance to talk about what has brought you in, ask questions about how therapy works and begin to shape goals. There is no pressure to share more than you are comfortable with. Sessions are confidential, and our reception team can answer questions before you arrive.
